Clarity and a plan for high-functioning adults (Menlo Park + California telehealth).
A lot of high-functioning adults wait because they’re still keeping up. If anxiety, low mood, trauma-related stress, or burnout is starting to affect sleep, focus, or steadiness, you’re not overreacting. You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from a thoughtful comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. Sometimes the most helpful thing is getting clear on what’s going on and what to do next.

Dr. Shaista Khan is a board-certified adult psychiatrist with 24+ years of experience, including research at Stanford and years of complex clinical work in the Bay Area.
Many of her patients are high-functioning and responsible, and they come in feeling stretched thin while still trying to hold everything together.
Clients often leave the evaluation with clearer answers, a practical plan, and relief from feeling like they’re guessing.

I believe the first step should feel clear and steady. In a brief 15-minute consultation, we can clarify what you’re experiencing, discuss whether we’re a good fit, and outline thoughtful next steps.
private, flexible care
Whether you meet me either in person in my Menlo Park office or online from anywhere in California, the goal is the same: reduce the load, improve daily functioning, and build momentum without rushing the work.
The first visit is designed to help us get oriented quickly and thoughtfully. We will review what you have been experiencing, when it started, and what seems to make it better or worse.
We will also talk about sleep, energy, focus, mood patterns, stress load, and any trauma-related symptoms that may be shaping your nervous system.
If you have tried medication before, we will look at what helped, what did not, and what side effects or concerns mattered to you.
By the end of the visit, you should have a clearer understanding of what may be driving your symptoms and what your options are.
If medication is appropriate, we will choose an approach carefully and outline what we are targeting, what to watch for, and what follow-up will look like.
If therapy or other supports are part of your plan, we will coordinate around those as well.
We review symptoms, timeline, stress load, sleep, functioning, and relevant history.
You receive a clinical synthesis that connects what you’re experiencing to likely drivers and possibilities.
You’ll get specific recommendations. That may include medication options, therapy coordination, and a follow-up plan.
If you’re debating therapy vs medication, or you’re not sure what you’re dealing with, an evaluation is often the cleanest first step. It helps you make decisions based on clarity, not guesswork.
I work with many patients to help them restore sleep, reduce anticipatory dread, regain emotional regulation, function at work without collapsing, and feel less alone and more like themselves again.
A comprehensive psychiatric evaluation is a detailed first appointment designed to understand the full picture. We look at symptoms, timeline, stress load, sleep, functioning, and relevant history. The goal is clarity. You should leave with a clear clinical summary and practical recommendations for next steps.
Therapy focuses on ongoing support and skill-building. A psychiatric evaluation focuses on assessment, diagnosis when appropriate, and treatment planning, including medication considerations.
Most initial evaluations are 60–90 minutes. This gives enough time to understand what is going on without rushing.
If you can, bring a short list of your main symptoms and when they started, any medications you have tried, and what you are hoping will change. If you have records from prior care, those can be helpful too. You do not need to organize everything perfectly. We will guide the process.
If a diagnosis is appropriate, yes. Sometimes the evaluation results in a clear diagnosis. Other times, the most helpful outcome is diagnostic clarity around what is most likely going on and what needs to be ruled out. Either way, the goal is a plan that fits the reality of your symptoms.
At the conclusion of the intake process, you will receive a summary of findings and recommendations. Next steps may include medication options, therapy coordination, lifestyle supports, or a follow-up plan depending on your needs. If ongoing care is appropriate, we will discuss what that would look like.
Yes. If you live in California, the evaluation can be done via telepsychiatry. If you are local, in-person visits are also available in Menlo Park.
If it is affecting sleep, focus, relationships, emotional steadiness, or your ability to function the way you want to, it is worth addressing. You do not need to be in crisis to benefit from psychiatric care. Many high-functioning adults come in because they can tell something is shifting and they want clarity before it gets worse.
